3 days into the Tour ...

Posted Jul 8, 2008

Well we are 3 days into the Tour de France, and it has been a relatively tame ride so far - apart from the usual crashes.

Day 4 sees the individual Time trial which sees every racer complete a 28km course, in a race against the clock.

It is often called the "Race of truth" because it is the cyclist, the course and clock - no team, no drafting - just sweat and tears (and somtimes a little blood).

The order of departure is last to first - meaning the leader of the GC (See previous blog:  what does it all mean?) or the wearer of the yellow jersey, will be the last one to depart.

The Time trial is always an impressive display, with the cyclist coming out in Tiem trial suites and helmets for aerodynamics, the most tricked out bikes on the planet, and loads of aggression.

The importnace of the Time trial is that if you are a good all-round cyclist, and a really good Time trialist, you have the potential to pull out some good time gains against the rest of the field and this help you increase you standings on the GC, or even put you onti yellow.

The average speed will be around 50Km per hour - so go and check it out.
