Yoga : ON and OFF the mat

Posted Sep 24, 2008

I was inspired by another teacher the other day during my yoga pracitce. She reminded me that yoga is not only a pracitce that we do for an hour a day but it is a practice that we should take with us throughout the other 23 hours of the day. Yoga is a away of life. It is being aware, awake and mindful. We spend so much time analyzing the past and hoping about the future that we forget to just enjoy the little moment to moment nuances of our lives. At the end of a yoga practice we lye in Savasana, which in English means corpse posture. It closes the physical part of the practice down and just allows us to be still. By stilling our physical body, we eventually begin to still the mind.  Of course, no one likes to think or talk about death but in reality it could happen at any time. So for five minutes or maybe for one hour outside your yoga practice try to be awake, aware and in the moment of now.
